Atlantic hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata imbricata)

Atlantic hawksbill sea turtle live tropical and subtropical seas of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans.  They nest on beaches in at least 60 different nations. This species was endangered because of poaching, the commerce of their shells, habitat loss, bycatch, and marine debris. The number of  Atlantic hawksbill  sea turtles may have declined as much as 80 percent.

Global numbers are difficult to estimate but in 1989 between 15000 and 25000 female hawksbill sea turtles nested worldwide.

As shown in the graph, at protected beaches on Mona Island Puerto Rico nests increased from 177 in 1974 to 332 in 2005
